Twitter and Domaining – they really go well together like peanut butter and jelly.
Twitter and Domaining
Opening a Twitter account was one of the first things I did when I started to get into domaining and it was a really smart move. After reading many blogs and forums, it quickly became apparent who some of the successful players are. As such, I followed them and I followed the people they followed, for the most part. In about a year, I’ve obtained over 835 followers and it grows every week. I use and recommend that you use TrueTwit verified followers. This way, you know the followers you have are real and not bots or spam followers. Be sure to follow me @vinsdomainscom
As I am only a part time domainer with a full time day job, I find that Twitter keeps me up-to-date with important news, posts and Tweets related to the domain name world. I use it to tweet names I have for sale, to tweet about blog posts like this one that I have written or to re-tweet something that I have found interesting and think my followers might like too. Just always remember that Twitter is public and everything you Tweet is being read by all. People have been criminally charged for tweets they have made, so really think through your Tweets before posting!

Anyway, Twitter has been very busy trying to make it’s platform even more fun, useful, and secure. In the last couple of months, there have been some interesting developments at Twitter that include the following:
Vine for Android: Vine is an interesting way to see and share life in motion, where you can create short, beautiful, looping videos in a simple and fun way for your friends and family to see. Now available on Google Play and also available for iPhone in the App Store.
The Windows Phone and BlackBerry app have been updated recently. Be sure to take advantage of the latest Twitter features and functionality while you’re on the move, like me. You can find these apps on Twitter’s mobile downloads page.
I am very happy to see an upgrade to the Twitter Login verification, where a second check has been added in the login process to make sure it’s really you. Here you can add and confirming a phone number and email address with your account to start taking advantage of this additional security.
You may have also recently received some correspondance regarding advertising on Twitter, who is now set to experiment with ways to make ads on Twitter more useful to their users in the United States by displaying promoted content from brands and business they’ve shown interest in. These tailored ads are based on information, such as browser-related information (a browser cookie ID), that their ad partners share with them. You can learn more about this in Twitter’s recent blog post.
The good news is that While Twitter wants to make thier ads more useful, they also want to give users simple and meaningful privacy options. You can simply uncheck the box next to “Promoted content” in your account settings, and Twitter will not match your account to information shared by our ad partners for tailoring ads. Thankfully, this is the only place you’ll need to disable this feature on Twitter.
Since Twitter supports Do Not Track (DNT), Twitter will not receive browser-related information from our ad partners for tailoring ads if you have DNT enabled in your browser.
Twitter always has more updates coming, so keep your eye on the Official Twitter Blog or follow @twitter for the latest information. In the meantime, you can also visit Twitter’s Help Center for more information about these options, and check out the short update to Twitter’s Privacy Policy under Third Parties.
Again, Twitter and domaining go together really well and hopefully you are making the most out of you business, using one of the great social media tools today to accomplish your goals!

A real “Hats Off” to Afternic, Namejet and Elliot Silver for putting together a great domainer networking event last night in Boston, including a ballgame at Fenway, where the Red Sox had 20 hits in a win against the Colorado Rockies! The evening started off at Game On, a bar/restaurant located along side of Fenway Park. Domainers were instantly greeted by a hard working lovely waitress who served many refreshing cocktails to the thirsty bunch on a very hot evening. We were set-up right along side the glassed-in batting cage for the opposing team, so it was pretty cool to watch some of the Rockies loosen-up. There was quite a bit of food to pick on throughout the pre-game networking event, and big shout-out and Thank You to Afternic for hosting a great pre-game event.
Domaining at Fenway Park
The event was well attended with almost 50 guests, including some well known names in the industry such as Matt Overman of Namejet, Bradan Pollock of Legal Brand Marketing, Dave Evanson of Sedo, Tessa Holcomb and the lovely ladies from Igloo – Domain Advisors and many others seasoned domainers. Folks had made their way to the event from as far as Germany and Nova Scotia. While networking was a little tight during the pre-game party, the standing room seats on the third base side of Fenway Park was perfect for the event. Another shout-out and Thank You to Namejet for purchasing the game tickets for each of the attendees of the event! I personally was able to speak with almost every participant for a period of time and took advantage of everybody’s accessibility and willingness to hang out and chat. It was my first domaining networking experience and I was really pleased to have attended and met such great people. It is obvious to see how such events can spark new ideas, invigorate the mission and start new relationships.
Lastly, I wanted to give another shoutout to Elliot Silver for putting the event together. On the heels of the Boston tragedy, it really was a great idea to raise some funds for One Fund Boston, while at the same time watch a ballgame, enjoy some cocktails and network with a truly great bunch of people with something in common. I know for a fact that this is not the first time Elliot gets involved with raising funds for a cause he believes in and I really hope this encourages others to do the same. Keep up the great work Elliot and thanks to all those who attended and made the night a great one!

Gibbie.com – A great first name domain name, name of a novel and is a very memorable and radio friendly domain name, making it pretty brandable. Additionally, it was registered in 1998, so it has some age. Don’t wait, this one will be gone by your next visit!
Some Domaining Pet Peeves
Some Domaining Pet Peeves
Some Domaining Pet Peeves – I’ve accumulated some of these over the last year and thought it was worth a post about it. My first domaining pet peeve involves GoDaddy. Don’t get me wrong, a happen to like GoDaddy a lot and I’m a regular customer, but I do have a GoDaddy pet peeve that I’d like to air out today in hopes of getting them to change their ways a little. How many domainers out there have registered a typo domain accidentally. It happens all the time to newbies who don’t realize their mistake until after they have paid for and own the name. We have all learned that lesson at one time or another, or likely will if it hasn’t happened yet. In fact, just the other day, I attempted to hand register a name at GoDaddy, but inadvertently misspelled the name. It was obvious to me and I immediately made the correction before registering the name I was really after.
This is where my domaining pet peeve kicks in. Two days later, I received an e-mail from GoDaddy, indicating that the mispelled domain name that I had originally typed-in a couple of days earlier, was still available to register. No sh*t Sherlock, of course it is still available to register, as it was an accidental misspelled typo that I really had no intention of registering. While I realize that GoDaddy has an automated system to send out these e-mails in hopes of generating more business, in my opinion, the practice stinks, especially when it involves an obvious (and worthless) typo. I can only imagine how many newbies actually respond to these e-mails and go ahead and register the mis-typed name, not realizing they had originally provided a typo domain name. While I’m sure the percentage is small, it really gets under my skin, as this is at least the third time this has happened to me over the last year. It leaves a taste in your mouth that they are trying to capitalize and prey upon the unknowing, non-English speaking and/or vulnerable newbie for a couple of extra bucks. While some of you may say some people register these names on purpose and therefore GoDaddy is going after potential business, I still say it stinks. I’m not aware of other entities doing the same thing out there, but I’m sure there are. Regardless, every time I get one of these e-mails, my toes curl.
The next domaining pet peeve I’d like to discuss involves the US mail. I happen to be a philatelist for over thirty years, so I also love the US Postal Service, US mail and all of the stamps that go with them, but I digress. Ever since becoming a domainer, the amount of junk mail that I receive is pretty wild, as it all has to do with domains I’ve acquired or registered. Now, I’m not talking about spam or junk e-mail, although we all get plenty of that too. I’m talking about hard mail into your mailbox. Just yesterday, I received an offer for a Gold card from American Express. The offer was sent to my address and sent to ToysAway. I happened to have registered ToysAway.com last year, so it is pretty obvious where they got there information. This kind of mail comes frequently and includes credit card offers, trademark service offerings and even product catalogs. It truly is a waste of paper and resources and yet another domaining pet peeve that make my toes curl.
I’m sure we all have some domaining pet peeves that deserve airing out. Please take the time to leave a comment and share your biggest domaining pet peeve. Perhaps it will make you feel better!
